Duties of Job

Alloy Pressure Welder
Duties:
Welders join or sever metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping and other metal
components, make metal parts used in industrial construction.  Experience
working in petro chemical, nuclear or electrical plant facilities is an asset.
Welding usually involves applying heat to metal pieces to melt and fuse them together.
In electric arc welding, heat is created as an electric current flows through an arc between
the tip of the welding electrode and the metal. In gas welding, such as oxy-acetylene
welding, the flame from the combustion of burning gases melts the metal. In both arc and
gas welding, filler materials are melted and added to fill the joint and make it stronger. In
resistance welding, the metal piece itself is melted as current flows through it, and no filler
is added.
Welders use different welding processes and fillers depending upon the type of metal, its
size and shape, and requirements for finished product strength. For a typical welding
project, they:
Develop patterns for projects or follow directions given in layouts, blueprints and work
orders
Clean, check for defects and shape component parts, sometimes using a cutting torch
Weld parts together
Welders may also build up worn parts by welding layers or high-strength hard-metal alloys
onto them.
Working Conditions:
Welders work in a wide variety of work environments. A 40-hour week is normal, but
overtime is usually required.
There is some risk of injury involved working with torches and hot metals and the resulting
sparks and toxic gases.

Other Skills / Competencies

Welding Requirements:
1.0 Pressure Welders gaining employment through the ACTIMS group will be required to
show their welding competency by testing one (1) or more welding tests once they arrive in
Canada.
2.0 The Pressure Welder will acknowledge that any failure of any weld test, could result in a
break of contract, and will be sent home.
3.0 The Pressure Welder will be given a choice between two (2) initial welding competencies
that will be administered by ABSA (The Pressure Equipment Safety Authority). If successful,
the welder will be issued a C-pressure temporary certification. (Pg.2 for test specifics)
4.0 Upon the successful completion of the initial C-Pressure certification, the contractor might
require additional testing to be done. This testing will be administered by a company
representative. (Pg.2 for test specifics)
5.0 The following explains criteria that would constitute a failure of a given weld test.
a. Welding the test coupon using an electrode other than the one specified for
the test.
b. Welding the test coupon out of the specified position, sequence, or progression
other than that specified for the test.
c. Excess penetration in the root or final weld cap reinforcement exceeding 3MM
(1/8”). Concave root under the thickness of the parent metal.
d. Pinholes, Coldlap (cold roll)or Undercut in the root or weld reinforcement.
e. Incomplete penetration, lack of fusion, craters or burn thru in the weldment.
f. Grinding inside of the pipe after initial tack welds are complete.
g. Rough appearance of the final weld including excessive grinding.
h. Exceeding the permisable time given to complete the test.
i. Straps prepared for the bend test ground below the base material
j. Partial fracture of a bent strap that exceeds 3MM (1/8”) in any direction or a
failure using the RT/UT method as stated in ASME Sec.9 QW191
k. Deviation of the given procedure that has been communicated by the examiner
including anything beyond what has been stated above
